The ready made and elevated art

In some cases pre-existing objects are brought together in such a way that their original identity is still apparent, yet transformed when seen in a new context. This type of sculpture is called assemblage.

This is a list of examples of assemblage and elevated contemporary art from older examples to new:

Marcel Duchamp - Fountain 1917 - Ironically named, this historical piece of 'ready made' modern art pushed the boundries on what could be considered worthy of being in a art gallery space. Giving a urinal a new context gives it an elevated sense of importance. As an arti piece it questions what is considered artwork if not context.

Piero Manzoni - The artists shit 1961 - "Manzoni sold one to Alberto Lùcia for 30 grams of 18-carat gold" -Tate. Putting a price on the artists physical and metaphorical being in a consumable way. It is packaged like a market item to emphasise the cycle of marketing and consumption. This fetishisation was one of Manzoni's many works using 'objects' relating to the exclusiveness of an artists being. This item proves a point of what people would consider valuable. The intimacy of the artist is what is being sold, using an ironic and contrivercial item elevates the meaning and intention behind it.

Tracey Emin - My Bed 1998 - This piece is a visual representation of a difficult time for the creator. Spending multiple days bedridden dealing with a nervous and depressive episode. This piece shows her vunerability and flaws at this point in her life. It was only through getting up and going to bathroom she looked back and reflected upon her self and state at that time. Through showing this piece publicly she is opening up her intimacy with her bed at that time and its importance.

Emma Sulkowicz - Carry that Weight 2014 - This piece is of endurance preformance art. The artist carried around a university mattress for everywhere by herself. She was not allowed to ask for help carrying this piece but was allowed to accept help. The preformance piece was made in retaliation to a claim of a fellow classmate raping her and getting away with it. Her mattress was to stay with her till legal action was made against him. This act caused a lot of debate and discussion around the drama between the two individuals leading to the conclusion that the artist lying about the rape.

Supreme - Brick 2016 - Supreme a Manhattan clothing brand that is heavily integrated into skate culture and hip hop. As the brand grew it maintained its quality and ethics throughout its products. While their clothing is well known to urban shoppers so is their less cohesive line of accessories. They also sell general items for sale with their logo slapped on. This is a both a parody and satire to the consumer culture and counter culture surounding streetware. Due to being a street brand they parody at the hint of crime having lots of their odd items be useful for criminal activity e.g. hammer, baseball bat.

C4D - Getting back into things

To get back into the swing of things after a long holiday away from Cinema4D I decided to familiarise myself with the program. I practised cutting out shapes from other shapes, different lighting, backgrounds and simple animation.

I next practiced more random techniques. Applying randomised effects to an object can give different results of movement. Adding noise effect to a shape can create a feeling of Anxiety of rapid movement.

Simple Geometry

In todays session I wanted to try a variety of animation techniques to create a mini showreel of the stuff I can do in Adobe AfterEffects.

30 motion tests in 30 seconds from Steffen K on Vimeo.

Focusing the animation on motion, I made a collection of mood boards showing patterns and styles I would like to implement. To get a strong impact I used a minimal black and white colour scheme. Each segment of animation is 1 second long. This is enough time to show movement and quickly move onto the next type of animation.

The music I put into my piece was supposed to sound very irratic and electronic to match the fast paced scenes.

what price do you put on a brand? food for thought.

The average sized house as about 1,200 square feet, the perimeter of the house might be approximately 146 linear feet (25′ x 48′). Multiply that by a height of 8 feet to get a total square wall footage of 1,168. At 7 bricksper sf, you'll need about 8,176 bricks

round that to 9000 bricks to build a house

regular bricks costs : 27p

It would cost £2430 to build a house made from 'regular' bricks.

Designer Supreme bricks cost £30

It would cost £270.000 to build a house made from designer bricks.

supreme like to use their limited edition product scheme to their advantage. making things harder to own only raises the popularity and want for an item. Even bricks apparently...

Logincharlie Twitch Layout

I got to help out a friend with a 24 hour charity live stream for twitch. He gave me full range over his personal branding and layout with the only request of making the colour scheme purple.

this branding and design included profile headers, icons and 'afk' screensaver for his stream. I also created a simple looping gif animation that played within his stream.

It was a fun experience to be able to work to the websites specifications and know the work i was doing was for a charity event.

Twitch Branding

I got a commission to continue a clients branding for a streaming network called 'Twitch'. The only thing I was given to work with was the clients pre-existing logo and colour scheme. He also discussed the idea of his theme not being too serious and 'messy'.

The aspects of his page he wished for me to work on were his information headers that go underneath his stream window, and the overlay for the stream itself.

For the headers, I got the appropriate specifications given on the twitch website information section and created individual minimal vector art that accurately depicts the category it is in.

The stream overlay was a lot more specific. Each streamer has a personal way which they like to layout their streams. The client gave me a rough sketched guide on the foundations of his layout, specifying it to be plain for him to add information on top of. The purpose of this overlay is to simply frame the content of the stream and for information to be displayed while showing the personality and brand of the streamer.

This content is now available to view on his twitch page for any of his viewers to look at. It also give his stream a more consistent visual brand.
